The premium seat is the interesting row for engineering, and not because of the multiplier. It removes the five-hour usage window. On a standard seat, a heavy Codex session can exhaust a rolling five-hour budget in the morning and leave the developer waiting; the premium seat converts that from a hard stop into a bigger pool.
What Enterprise adds over Business
OpenAI describes the Enterprise and Edu tier as "Everything in Business and" a specific list. Taken from the Codex pricing page in August 2026, that list is short and squarely aimed at a security review.

Codex on a Business or Enterprise plan
Standard ChatGPT Business seats include access to Codex, OpenAI’s agentic coding platform, alongside ChatGPT itself. That is the default and it has not changed. What changed is the separate path that used to exist beside it.
- Teams could add Codex-only seats to a Business or Enterprise workspace with pay-as-you-go pricing and no fixed seat fee, billed purely on token consumption and with no rate limits.
- From 24 June 2026, Codex-only seats are no longer available to new ChatGPT Business plans, or to Business workspaces that had never added one before that date. Existing pay-as-you-go seats are unaffected.
- The practical effect: if you are buying today, the route to Codex for a non-ChatGPT-using engineer is a full Business seat, not a cheaper metered one.
OpenAI’s own guidance on what Codex costs a developer is worth quoting because it is unusually direct: on average roughly $100 to $200 per developer per month, with large variance driven by model choice, how many instances a developer runs in parallel, automations, and fast mode. That is remarkably close to Anthropic’s published $150 to $250 for Claude Code, and it is the number to budget against, not the seat price.
Credits: the unit both plans meter in
Once a workspace exceeds its included limits, it continues on credits. Business workspace owners buy them in Settings > Billing, and credits are pooled across all users rather than allocated per person, which is the right shape for a team with an uneven usage distribution.
OpenAI publishes a rate card in credits per million tokens but does not publish a dollar price per credit on that page. OpenAI adds that GPT-5.6 usage averages 5 to 40 credits per message, or 20 cents to $1.60 at that rate, and that fast mode consumes credits faster on supported models. Cached input at a tenth of input is the number that decides whether an agentic workflow is affordable, because a coding agent resends a large and mostly unchanged context on every turn.

The Enterprise numbers you will read elsewhere
Search results for this query are dominated by pages that state a confident per-seat figure for ChatGPT Enterprise. Those numbers are aggregated from customer reports and analyst notes, not from OpenAI. They cluster in a wide band and they are stated with a precision nobody has earned.
- OpenAI publishes no seat price for Enterprise. Any figure you see is somebody’s reconstruction.
- Reported figures vary by seat count, contract length, term, and how much of the negotiation your procurement team is prepared for, which is exactly why no single number can be right.
- The published Business price is a real floor. An Enterprise quote materially above it should be justified by named controls you will actually turn on, not by tier prestige.
- The one Enterprise variable with a documented effect on developer experience is whether the contract is on flexible credit pricing. Get that in writing.
