Claude Fable 5.1

Fable 5.1 replaces Fable 5 in Continuum’s new-session lineups. It keeps the same capability class, expands the cache-read discount to $0.25 per million, and uses claude-fable-5-1.

Continuum merchandises Fable 5.1 on the native Claude and hosted Continuum rails. The older Fable 5 id remains billable for historical and in-flight usage but is not offered for new sessions.
Closed weights Hosted on Continuum Vendor lab

The dateless API id and pinned snapshot are both claude-fable-5-1. Continuum uses the bare id at the gateway and continuum/claude-fable-5-1 in cross-provider pickers.

Adaptive thinking is always on. Supported effort levels are low, medium, high, xhigh, and max; high is the default. The input context is 1,000,000 tokens, maximum output is 128,000 tokens, and the knowledge cutoff is June 2026.

Anthropic positions it for demanding reasoning and long-horizon agentic work. Continuum gives both rails the same auto-routing scores while delisting Fable 5 from new work.

02

Should I use this for coding agents

Use Fable 5.1 for the hardest long-running coding work, architecture decisions, and investigations where coherence and taste matter more than unit cost.

Choose it instead of Fable 5 for every new session. The old id remains only so historic analytics and already-running hosted work continue to price correctly.

No independent row for this SKU

No independent board lists this exact SKU as of 2026-08-19.

Closest benchmarked sibling: Claude Opus 5, 74% ±4% Pass@1 at max on the DeepSWE official board. That is a score for the sibling, not for this SKU.

Boards checked: DeepSWE official (2026-08-13), Artificial Analysis Intelligence Index, vals.ai hero index. Every card that does carry a row is on the coding leaderboard.

When not to use it

Trust this before you buy

  • Do not force a particular tool or require any tool. Fable 5.1 returns an error for forced tool choice; Continuum removes that constraint and leaves tool selection automatic.
  • At $10 per million input and $50 per million output, it is not the default for routine edits. Start with the cheaper working model unless the task needs this capability class.
  • Closed weights. You cannot retain or air-gap the parameters.

Weights

Anthropic does not publish Fable 5.1 weights. There is no official Hugging Face repo and no Files button on this page. Get Plus buys hosted inference, not a local checkpoint.

  • Capabilities: adaptive thinking always on; low, medium, high, xhigh, and max effort; 1M context; 128K maximum output.
  • Forced tool_choice values are unsupported. Automatic tool selection remains available.
  • Thinking blocks are tied to the model that produced them, so a continuation cannot treat a Fable 5.1 thinking block as interchangeable with another model’s block.

05

Continuum serving

Continuum hosts the bare gateway id claude-fable-5-1. Native Claude sessions use the same bare id on the user’s Anthropic subscription.

The previous claude-fable-5 row is absent from new-session menus. Its pricing and hosted capability metadata remain for history and in-flight sessions.

06

Economics

Official pricing per million tokens: $10 input, $50 output, $0.25 cache read, $12.50 five-minute cache write, and $20 one-hour cache write.

The cache-read price is one quarter of Fable 5’s $1 per million rate. Continuum’s gateway uses an exact 5.1 rate key so the older family prefix cannot overcharge cache hits.

FAQ

Does Fable 5.1 replace Fable 5?

Yes for new sessions. Continuum delists Fable 5 from pickers but retains its rate and capability rows so historic usage and in-flight hosted sessions remain correct.

Can Fable 5.1 force a specific tool?

No. Forced tool choice is a breaking change from Fable 5. Leave selection on automatic. Continuum clamps forced choices before forwarding the request.

Why does the lab blog disagree with DeepSWE or Scale?

Lab posts pick a harness, an effort, a split, and sometimes a private eval set. DeepSWE publishes the official mini-swe-agent row with cost, tokens, and steps. Scale SWE-bench Pro only counts when the public shared-harness board has a row we can fetch. A higher lab number is usually a different test, not a better one.
