Install Continuum on the Mac and connect the CLIs your subscriptions already cover - Claude Code under your Anthropic login, Codex under ChatGPT. This is the rail Aider cannot use: it authenticates with API keys, not plan logins.

Spawn a Continuum worktree session for a multi-hour ticket and leave Aider for the ten-minute fixes. See git worktrees if the isolation model is new to you.

How Continuum differs from an OSS pair CLI

How Continuum's workbench differs from Aider

  • Continuum hosts official agent CLIs (Claude Code over a PTY, Codex through the ACP harness, plus Cursor, Grok, Gemini, OpenCode) instead of being a pair-programming agent itself.
  • Those CLIs sign in with your subscription, so a Claude Max or ChatGPT plan is the billing rail. Aider is API keys only, which is cheaper at low volume and much more expensive at high volume.
  • A daemon plus Mac, web, iOS, and Watch clients share one session projection, so the same run is visible from a phone. Aider is one process in one terminal.
  • Multi-account isolation uses CLAUDE_CONFIG_DIR and CODEX_HOME rather than swapping HOME, so a second subscription never clobbers the first one's credentials.
  • Analytics parse the same JSONL files ccusage reads and price them with a LiteLLM snapshot, producing $ by repo, provider, and day - see ccusage.
  • Worktree sessions, per-hunk diff staging, and PR panes are first-class surfaces; Aider stays git-aware in its own way by committing each edit for you.
  • Continuum's shell layer is argv-only rather than string-concatenated, because real repo paths contain spaces. That is the kind of hardening a CLI-plus-scripts stack ends up writing itself.

Aider is intentionally sharp and terminal-native: one process, one repo, your keys. Continuum is a multi-client product with a daemon, gauges, mobile clients, and analytics. Pick by how much operational surface you actually want, and be honest that a workbench is heavier to install and to update.

API keys versus subscriptions.

This is the difference that shows up on a card statement. Aider authenticates with API keys, so a heavy day is a metered bill. Continuum drives CLIs that sign in with a Claude or ChatGPT plan, so a heavy day is a flat subscription plus a gauge telling you how much of the window is left. 03 · Cost instruments

Session line versus repo ledger.

Aider already prints tokens and cost for the session, which is more than most tools do, and it is enough when one person runs one loop. Continuum keeps a historical ledger across providers, repos, and days from local session files, which is what you need when four agents and two accounts are involved.

One shell versus a device fleet.

Aider goes anywhere a shell goes, including boxes where installing a daemon is not an option. Continuum wants its host software running - the Mac daemon, or the Go agent on Linux and Windows - and pays that back with sessions that survive a closed laptop lid and are steerable from a phone. Admit the loss.

If you want the lightest open-source pair loop, full model freedom including local models, and no product chrome at all, Aider wins outright and Continuum will feel heavy next to it. It is also the better answer when the license matters: Apache-2.0 you can read and fork versus a free app you cannot.

For multi-device, multi-agent ops, it is worth considering. For a lightweight open-source terminal pair loop, Aider is still the sharper tool and Continuum does not try to beat it there.
