Devin (Cognition) is still sold as "the AI software engineer", and by August 2026 it is a suite rather than a single agent: Devin Cloud, a Devin Desktop app, a Devin CLI, Devin Review for pull requests and visual QA, a Windows VM for legacy work, DeepWiki, and an enterprise tier. Its pricing was restructured into plain subscriptions: Free, Pro at $20/mo, Max at $200/mo, and Teams at $80/mo plus $40/mo per full developer seat, with self-serve usage metered as included quota plus on-demand credits and Agent Compute Units surviving only in enterprise order forms. Continuum is not a Devin clone. It is the free workbench that runs the coding agents and subscriptions you already have on machines you control, with plan gates, worktrees, diffs, PRs, live quota gauges, and a local ledger.   • Plan mode and mobile approve keep a human in the loop; the diff and PR panes show the work before it merges.
  • Worktree isolation keeps a running fleet off main, and a pre-prompt git checkpoint makes a bad turn a restore.
  • No Continuum markup rides a subscription session. Hosted inference is a separate, explicit plan you opt into.
  • Gauges and analytics answer "what is this autonomy costing?" from local history rather than an invoice next month.
  • Scheduled follow-ups and long-running sessions stay in your registry on your host, not in someone else's queue.

Service versus instrument.

Devin sells autonomous engineering as a product, and by 2026 that product includes a desktop app, a CLI, cloud agents, PR review, and DeepWiki. Continuum sells the cockpit for agents you already run. Do not buy Continuum expecting Devin's staffing narrative; do not buy Devin expecting to attach the Claude Max seat you are already paying for.

Continuum defaults to official CLIs on machines you enroll, with transcripts and keys local and a pre-prompt checkpoint before every turn. Devin's value is a managed environment where Cognition owns the runtime. That is a different ops and security story, not a worse one. Weigh it with agent security basics.

The Continuum app is free and your provider plans stay yours. Devin as of August 2026 is Free, Pro $20/mo, Max $200/mo, and Teams $80/mo plus $40/mo per developer seat, with usage beyond the included quota bought as credits at API pricing and enterprise contracts still denominated in ACUs. Neither model is wrong, but only one of them stops moving when the agent has a busy week.

04 · Where Devin is genuinely ahead

Admit the loss clearly.

Tab completions and inline edits in a first-party editor, a Windows VM for legacy stacks, PR review with visual QA, and an enterprise deployment story with SSO and dedicated support are all Devin product today. Continuum has none of those as SKUs and will not out-Devin Devin.

Autonomy is a dial, not a purchase.

Continuum's default is supervised: plan mode never bypasses approvals, worktrees box the blast radius, and the diff pane is where a turn earns its merge. You can loosen that per session. What you cannot do is buy a level of autonomy; you configure it, and the gauges tell you what it cost.

Free for a light quota, $20/mo for Pro, $200/mo for Max, and $80/mo plus $40/mo per full developer seat for Teams, with Enterprise quoted. Usage past the included quota is bought as on-demand credits at API pricing. The old public Core-plus-ACU rate card is gone from self-serve; ACUs now live in enterprise order forms.

Only for enterprise agreements, where Cognition's docs say customers are billed in Agent Compute Units at the rate set in their order form. Self-serve plans are billed as included quota plus on-demand credits, so the "one ACU is about fifteen minutes of Devin working" framing no longer describes what a Pro or Max subscriber sees.

No. Devin's plans include model access as part of the subscription and meter it as quota, so the frontier model spend goes through Cognition. Continuum is the opposite design: it drives the official Claude Code and Codex CLIs under your own login, and those tokens bill your existing plan with no Continuum markup.

For multi-provider local agent ops with mobile control and cost analytics, yes, it is a real consideration. For Cognition's managed autonomous engineer, PR review product, and enterprise deployment, Devin is a different purchase and Continuum does not replace it.

No. Continuum optimizes supervised multi-agent work: plan gates, worktrees, checkpoints, diffs, and PRs. You can run long unattended sessions on a host you own, but the product is a cockpit with the human in it, not a service that promises to finish the ticket alone.

On your Mac daemon by default, or on Linux and Windows hosts you enroll with the Continuum agent, reachable over Tailscale. Entitled Continuum Cloud accounts can also spawn a managed runner. In every case the agent is the official CLI running under your credentials.

You can leave managed sessions running on a host and steer them from the phone, and scheduled follow-ups exist. The difference is policy: Continuum ships supervision as the default and hands you the dial, whereas Devin sells the autonomous run as the product.

If you already pay for Claude or ChatGPT, Continuum is the cheaper line because the app is $0 and those plans do the work. Devin becomes the better buy the moment you actually want its managed autonomy, PR review, and enterprise controls, which is a different product rather than a pricier version of the same one.
