Grok Bot vs Manus: named teammates or metered task sessions

These two get grouped together because both rent you a computer with an agent on it, and that grouping hides the only differences that matter. Grok Bot sells persistent named teammates that share one machine, billed per seat with an uncapped token meter underneath. Manus sells metered task sessions, each on its own disposable machine, with a persistent always-on box available as a separate flat-rate add-on. Those are opposite answers to both of the questions that decide how this goes: how long does the machine live, and what does the meter count.

The short version

Grok Bot, launched 11 August 2026, gives you named Bots with persistent memory that all share one cloud computer per account, reached from desktop and mobile apps, gated behind a Cursor account and a seat costing $40 to a reported $300 a month, with an unpublished weekly token allowance and uncapped overage past it. Manus bills credits per agent action from a Free tier with 300 daily credits up to Pro plans starting at $20 a month for 4,000 credits and 20 concurrent tasks, and allocates a fresh isolated virtual machine for every task, which sleeps when idle and is recycled after 7 days on free plans or 21 on paid. Since its announcement on 30 April 2026 Manus also sells Cloud Computer, a persistent Ubuntu VM at $10, $30 or $50 a month, whose contents are deleted if you stop paying. Choose Grok Bot for a small set of named colleagues that accumulate context; choose Manus for many bounded jobs run in parallel with a predictable per-job cost. Neither runs on hardware you own, neither lets you choose the model, and neither reports what a given project cost you.

  • Opposite machine models. Grok Bot: one persistent VM shared by all your Bots. Manus: one disposable VM per task, plus an optional persistent one you rent separately.
  • Opposite meters. A Grok Bot seat is fixed and the token meter is uncapped. Manus credits are consumed per action against a published monthly allowance.
  • Manus publishes its numbers. Plans, credits, VM specs and deletion policy are all on its own help pages. xAI publishes no weekly allowance and no Heavy price we could load.
  • Grok Bot needs a Cursor account on every access path, and a SuperGrok link to a Cursor account is permanent.
  • Manus deletes the persistent machine’s contents if you stop paying: files, installed tools and databases, though delivered outputs stay in your chat history.
  • Neither answers the developer case well. No model picker, no hardware you own, no per-repository cost attribution.

The short answer

If you want a handful of named colleagues who remember everything and hand work to each other, Grok Bot is built for that and Manus is not. If you want to fire off many independent jobs and know roughly what each one costs, Manus is built for that and Grok Bot is not. Both are managed clouds, so both make the same trade on credentials and control.

What each one actually is

Grok Bot: colleagues that accumulate

You create named Bots and message them like people. Each carries a persona and memory; xAI’s documentation says context "compounds instead of resetting to a fresh environment on every task". Bots can be taught a procedure by demonstration and re-run it on a schedule, use connectors and MCP where an API exists, and drive the graphical interface directly where one does not. Several Bots can sit in a group chat and hand a task between them.

All of that rests on one architectural decision: "All of your Bots use the same persistent cloud computer. They share files, browser sessions, and app logins, which makes handoffs possible." Each Bot gets its own screen on that machine, and the documentation is explicit that this is parallelism rather than isolation: the screens exist "without getting separate security boundaries", and you should "treat a login or file placed on the computer as available to all of your Bots".

Manus: sessions that finish

Manus is organised around the task. You describe a job, and Manus allocates a machine for it: "Manus Sandbox is a fully isolated cloud virtual machine that Manus allocates for each task", with networking, a filesystem, a browser and software tools. Each sandbox "runs in its own environment, does not affect other tasks, and can execute in parallel", sleeps when nothing is happening, and is recycled after 7 days on the free tier or 21 days on Pro, with artefacts, uploads and important files restored automatically.

On 30 April 2026 Manus announced the other half. Cloud Computer is "a dedicated, persistent virtual machine in the cloud that allows Manus to run your applications, bots, and scripts 24/7": Ubuntu, reachable over SSH or a web terminal, command line only with no graphical interface, and deployed automatically when Manus decides a task needs continuous operation or shared state. The launch copy is the clearest statement of the category’s ambitions anywhere: "Let your digital employee take the night shift", under the heading "The Future of Work is Always On".

So Manus now spans both lifetimes deliberately: disposable machines for bounded work, and a rented persistent one for the things that have to keep running. Grok Bot only has the second, and shares it.

This is where the two products are genuinely opposed, and it is worth laying out because it decides both the security posture and the failure modes.

Read the isolation row as a genuine trade rather than a scoreboard. Manus’s per-task isolation means a task that goes wrong cannot touch the previous one, and it also means a task cannot benefit from what the previous one learned or logged into. Grok Bot’s shared machine means a research Bot can leave a file where a writing Bot picks it up and neither has to authenticate twice, and it also means one careless Bot has access to everything every other Bot has ever touched.

The bottom two rows are the whole comparison. A credit system has a natural stop: when the credits are gone, work stops until you buy more, and you decide whether to. An uncapped token meter has no stop, and Grok Bot pairs it with no model picker, so you cannot route cheap work to a cheaper model to slow it down. Reviewers also found the metering display itself unreliable during launch week, showing 48% consumption as 0%.

Credits have their own opacity problem, to be fair. The cost of a job is not knowable in advance because it depends on how many actions the agent takes; third-party write-ups report a simple exchange costing 5 to 15 credits and a heavy research run costing 500 to 900, which we could not verify against Manus and which you should treat as indicative. The difference is that the ceiling is yours to set.

Where each one wins

Grok Bot wins on

  • Continuity. A named Bot that has been doing your weekly reconciliation for a month is genuinely better at it than a fresh session, because the logins, the files and the preferences are all still there.
  • Handoffs. Group chats where one Bot passes work to another with shared context is a real capability, and it exists precisely because the machine is shared.
  • Teaching by demonstration. Walk it through a procedure once and save it as a routine. Manus has scheduling but not this.
  • Software with no API. Computer use against a graphical interface is central to the product rather than an edge case.
  • Bundling. If you already hold Cursor Pro+, Ultra, or a Teams plan, you already own it as of 21 August 2026.

Manus wins on

  • Trying it. A real free tier, and a 7-day trial on a paid one.
  • Predictability. Published plans, published credits, published VM specs, a published deletion policy. You can plan against these.
  • Parallelism with isolation. Twenty concurrent tasks that cannot interfere with each other is a different capability from several Bots sharing one filesystem.
  • Choosing your own persistence. Bounded work stays disposable; only the things that need to keep running get a permanent machine, at a price you can see.
  • Infrastructure-shaped jobs. SSH into an Ubuntu box running your scrapers, bots and databases is a more honest description of what the Cloud Computer is than "a teammate".

The choice is less about quality than about the shape of your work. Recurring cross-app processes with accumulated context favour Grok Bot. Many independent jobs, or genuine infrastructure you want an agent to babysit, favour Manus.

What neither gives you

Both are managed clouds, so both make the same four concessions, and if any of them is load-bearing for you then the comparison above is the wrong comparison.

That last row is the honest one and it is why both of these products exist. If you have no machine that stays awake, the own-hardware column is not available to you at any price, and you should buy the cloud product that matches your work shape.

If you do have one, the arithmetic changes quickly. A Mac mini is $599 once. Create revocable service accounts where the target system allows it, keep both products away from banking and payroll, and remember that neither offers a dry run: a test performs the real action. Plans are $10 a month for 2 vCPU with 1GB of RAM and 35GB of storage, $30 for 4GB and 70GB, and $50 for 8GB and 120GB.

What happens to my Manus Cloud Computer if I cancel?

Manus states that the persistent virtual machine will be shut down and that your working files, installed tools and databases stored on that Cloud Computer will be deleted. Final outputs, reports and files that Manus previously delivered into the chat interface remain in your chat history. Plan any state you care about as something to export rather than something to keep there.

Does Manus require a Cursor account the way Grok Bot does?

No. Grok Bot requires one on every access path, including for SuperGrok subscribers who never open the editor. Cursor also documents that a SuperGrok link is permanent once created: you cannot unlink a Grok account from a Cursor account or move the link elsewhere. Manus has no equivalent requirement; you sign up with a Manus account and that is the whole dependency.

Can either one run agents on my own machine?

No. Both are managed clouds by design, which is what makes them zero setup and always-on. If you want agents on hardware you own with remote control from a phone or browser, that is a different product shape: a desktop workbench such as Continuum runs Claude Code, Codex, Cursor, Grok, Gemini and OpenCode on your own Mac or Linux box for free, with per-repository cost attribution.
