Switch from Cursor to Continuum, and when not to

Cursor is the best AI editor on the market and this page is not going to pretend otherwise. It is also true that a growing number of teams are doing most of their real work by handing whole tasks to agents rather than editing with assistance, and that is a different product shape with a different cost structure. This is a guide to moving that half, honestly, including when you should not.

The short version

Continuum is a free multi-provider agent workbench, not an editor. It runs Claude Code, Codex, Cursor CLI, Gemini CLI, Grok, and OpenCode side by side in isolated git worktrees, with live quota gauges, spend by repository, and native Mac, iPhone, Watch, and web clients. Cursor remains better for tab completion, inline editing, and any team that wants one integrated product. The switch is worth making when the work has moved to delegated agent tasks, when the team runs more than one provider, or when spend needs a ceiling that actually stops. Keep Cursor as your editor either way; nothing here requires uninstalling it.

  • Continuum is not an editor. If you switch, you keep an editor, and Cursor is a fine one to keep.
  • The move is worth it when work has shifted from assisted editing to delegated tasks.
  • Cursor CLI runs inside Continuum, so the switch does not require abandoning your Cursor subscription.
  • The commercial change: a free client, and inference on subscriptions or keys you already hold.
  • What you give up: tab completion, inline edit, Bugbot, and the single integrated product.
  • Run both for a full release cycle. A migration you cannot reverse is not a migration, it is a bet.

First, the cases where you should stay on Cursor

This section is first deliberately. A page that argues for switching before it states the counter-case is advertising, and you would be right to distrust the rest of it.

  • Tab completion is your primary interaction. Cursor Tab is the best autocomplete in the category, it is unlimited on every paid plan, and it draws from no usage pool. Continuum has no equivalent because it is not an editor. If most of your day is typing with a model finishing your lines, stay.
  • Inline edit is how you work. Selecting a region and describing a change in place is an editor interaction, not an agent one. Nothing in a session workbench reproduces the tightness of that loop.
  • You want one product, not a stack. Cursor is an integrated purchase: editor, agent, review bot, cloud runs, admin. A workbench over separate CLIs is more capable and more parts. Some teams correctly prefer fewer parts.
  • Bugbot is doing real work for you. Agentic review on pull requests is a Cursor Teams feature with no direct Continuum equivalent. If your review process depends on it, that dependency has to be resolved before anything else.
  • Your team is genuinely single-vendor. The strongest argument for a multi-provider workbench evaporates if everyone actually uses one provider. Check rather than assume; most teams are surprised.
  • Procurement has already approved Cursor. A security review that has been completed is worth more than a feature. Do not reopen it for a marginal gain.

The cases where the switch is right

Each of these is a shape of work, not a feature comparison. If two or more describe your week, the migration is probably worth the fortnight it costs.

The through-line is that these are all consequences of the same shift: from a model that helps you write to agents that you assign and review. Cursor has excellent agent features and is not blind to this shift. It is simply architected around an editor, and an editor is the wrong container for six concurrent sessions on six branches.

What transfers, what maps, and what has no equivalent

Work through this table before you touch anything. The third column is the honest part, and it is where migrations fail when nobody reads it in advance.

The rules migration is worth doing carefully even if you stay. Conventions written into AGENTS.md and CLAUDE.md in the repository are read by every agent that opens it, including Cursor’s. The migration, in an order that stays reversible

Do not cancel anything

Cursor stays installed and paid for the entire migration. The Continuum workbench is free, so running both costs you nothing beyond the time. Any plan whose first step is a cancellation has removed your ability to compare.

Move conventions into the repository

Port .cursor/rules content into AGENTS.md and CLAUDE.md. Include build commands, test commands, architecture constraints, and the things reviewers keep repeating. Commit them. This step improves your Cursor experience too, so it is safe regardless of the outcome.

Install Continuum and connect one account

Start with the provider you use most. Sign-in is the CLI’s own account, so a Claude subscription stays a Claude subscription. Do not connect six providers on day one; a single working session teaches you more than a full configuration.

Run one real task in a worktree session

Pick a task you would otherwise have given to Cursor agent mode. Create the session in worktree mode, confirm the branch and directory are isolated from your working checkout, and take it through plan, diff, and pull request. Compare the elapsed time and the review burden against your memory of the Cursor run, not against a benchmark.

Add the second provider

The multi-provider case is the one that does not exist in Cursor at all, so evaluate it explicitly rather than as a side effect. Run the same prompt through two providers and see whether the comparison is worth the extra window.

Pair a phone

Approve a plan and read a diff from the iPhone client while the session runs on your desk machine. This is the feature people underestimate on paper and overuse within a week, and you cannot evaluate it from a description.

Turn on the spend view

Let the ledger accumulate a week of real work, then look at spend by repository. If that number tells you something your Cursor analytics could not, you have found the concrete reason for the migration. If it does not, that is a real finding too.

Decide the seat question separately

The workbench is free. The organization plan at $25 a seat buys model policy, weekly caps, approvals, and one usage view across providers. Those are two independent decisions and collapsing them makes both harder.

Run parallel through one release cycle

Not a fortnight, a full cycle including whatever your release looks like. The failure modes of a new agent workflow appear at integration and at incident time, not during a feature.

How the money changes shape

The comparison people expect is $40 against $25. That is not the interesting part. The interesting part is that the client stops being a line item and the inference becomes explicit.

The direction of the difference matters more than the size. Cursor bundles model access into a seat and lets it overflow into on-demand billing, which is the right design for a team that must not stop. Continuum separates the client from the inference and puts a hard ceiling on the latter, which is the right design for a team that must not be surprised. Pick the failure mode, then the price.

Rolling back

A migration you cannot undo in an afternoon is a commitment, not a trial, and it should be priced as one. The rollback here is unusually cheap, which is the main argument for trying at all.

  1. Your code never moved. Sessions run on your machine against your repositories. There is no export step because there was no import step.
  2. Your subscriptions never moved. Claude, ChatGPT, and Cursor accounts stay yours and keep working in their own CLIs.
  3. Your conventions improved either way. Rules that moved into AGENTS.md are read by Cursor too, so that work is not wasted on a rollback.
  4. Worktrees are removable. Delete the branches and the working trees; the main checkout was never touched.
  5. The only real cost is attention. Budget the fortnight honestly at the start rather than discovering it halfway.

Questions people ask

Is Continuum a replacement for Cursor?

Not directly. Cursor is an editor with agent features; Continuum is an agent workbench with no editor. Most people who adopt Continuum keep an editor open next to it, and Cursor is a good one to keep. The half that moves is delegated agent work, not editing.

Can I still use Cursor if I switch?

Yes, and you probably should. Cursor CLI is one of the agents Continuum runs as a session, so your Cursor subscription keeps earning its price even if the editor window is open less often.

Does Continuum have tab completion?

No. There is no autocomplete, because it is not an editor. This is the single largest thing you give up, and if Tab is your primary interaction you should stay on Cursor.

What happens to my .cursor/rules files?

Port the content into AGENTS.md and CLAUDE.md in the repository. Every agent reads those, including Cursor, so the work improves your setup whether or not you complete the migration.

How much does Continuum cost compared to Cursor Teams?

The workbench is free on every platform. The organization plan is $25 per seat per month billed by live member count, against $40 per user per month for Cursor Teams. The larger structural difference is that model inference is separate rather than bundled into the seat.

Is there an equivalent of Bugbot?

No first-party agentic pull request reviewer. If Bugbot is load-bearing in your review process, resolve that before migrating, because it is not something the workbench substitutes for.

Can my team keep Cursor while I move?

Yes, and a staggered move is the sensible shape. The workbench is free, so an individual can evaluate it for a month without a procurement conversation or a change to anyone else.

How long should the migration take?

Plan for one full release cycle running both. The failure modes of a new agent workflow show up at integration and incident time, and a two-week trial that only covers feature work will miss them.
