Is SuperGrok worth it? The honest math for each tier

The short answer, tier by tier

"Is SuperGrok worth it" has no single answer because SuperGrok is not one product. It is four purchases at four price points that happen to share a brand, and the honest verdict flips three times as you climb.

The $30 tier is the one nobody writes about

xAI’s announcement page for its coding CLI contains one sentence that most of this category has not read: "Available now to all SuperGrok and X Premium Plus subscribers." Grok Build is a full terminal coding agent, with a plan, review, and apply flow over diffs, MCP server support, parallel sub-agents working in git worktrees, a headless mode for scripting and CI, and an ACP surface so other tools can drive it. It reads AGENTS.md, plugins, hooks, and skills. Its default model is Grok 4.6.

Pages currently ranking for the coding comparison queries price that at $299 a month, describe it as Heavy-only, or state that no individual tier carries it. All three are wrong against a page xAI publishes, and the error is a factor of ten. Anyone who read one of those pages and concluded that xAI’s coding agent was out of reach was misinformed by $270 a month.

The comparison is close enough that the deciding factor is usually not price at all. It is whether you like the model and whether the CLI fits your hands. That is a genuinely reasonable thing to spend $30 finding out, and the annual price of $300 makes it $25 a month if you already know the answer.

Is $100 worth it over $30?

SuperGrok Plus at $100 a month, or $1,000 a year, is 3.33x the $30 SuperGrok price, a 233% increase. It buys exactly one new capability and a lot of headroom.

• Grok Bot access. Cursor’s documentation: "Only individual SuperGrok Plus and individual SuperGrok Heavy grant Grok Bot usage", and Plus grants "generous linked Grok Bot usage, below the Heavy tier". This is the reason the tier exists.
• Higher usage everywhere else: chat, Imagine at 1080p rather than 480p, voice, and Grok Build all run at raised limits.
• Priority during peak load and earlier access to new models.

So the question reduces cleanly: do you want Grok Bot, and is $70 a month the cheapest way to get it? The answer to the second half is usually no. Grok Bot is granted by six plans, and the two cheapest are on the Cursor side of the house: Cursor Teams Standard at $40 a seat, and Cursor Pro+ at $60 for an individual. Both are cheaper than SuperGrok Plus and both carry the same entitlement.

The right way to read that table is as a reason to keep SuperGrok at $30 and add a Cursor plan, rather than upgrading to Plus. $30 plus $60 is $90, less than Plus at $100, and it gets you the Cursor editor as well. The case for Plus is if you want maximum chatbot and Imagine allowances specifically, which is a real want and is not the want most people arrive with.

Is $300 worth it over $100?

SuperGrok Heavy at $300 a month is $3,600 a year with no reported annual discount. Over Plus it adds Grok 4 Heavy, the multi-agent mode running up to 16 sub-agents on one problem, and the highest Grok Bot allowance available.

The multi-agent mode is a real capability and nothing cheaper carries it. It helps on breadth-shaped problems, meaning exhaustive research sweeps and wide option comparisons, and it does not help on narrow ones. If your hardest weekly task is a specific code change, sixteen agents is the wrong tool and Grok Build at $30 is the right one.

The allowance argument is subtler and it is the one that occasionally justifies the tier. Grok Bot sits on a weekly token allowance whose size xAI does not publish, and past it overage bills at raw model rates with no spend cap available. If you run Bots on real recurring work every day, buying the highest allowance is buying insurance against an uncapped meter, and that can be rational at $300 in a way it is not at $100.

One arbitrage does change the verdict. Cursor Ultra at $200 also grants Grok Bot, so if you were buying Ultra anyway, Heavy is only about $100 more than a plan you already wanted. Under that framing it is a much easier yes. The Heavy page works the numbers through in full.

SuperGrok against the subscriptions you already hold

Nobody buys SuperGrok in a vacuum. The realistic question is whether it earns a slot alongside, or instead of, what you already pay for.

The honest read on the head-to-head is that the models are close enough that plan features decide it more often than model quality does. Grok 4.6 scores 61 on the Artificial Analysis Intelligence Index, level with GPT-5.6 Sol, with Claude Opus 5 reported at 63. On CursorBench v3.2, Grok 4.6 at xhigh effort lands at 70.8 per cent against Opus 5 at max effort on 70.0 per cent, at roughly a third of the cost per task. On SWE-Marathon, the most product-realistic benchmark in the set, Claude Code with Opus 5 reaches 50.0 per cent against Grok Build with Grok 4.6 at 31.9 per cent. Those are not the same verdict, and any page that gives you one number is cherry-picking.

When no subscription is the right answer

The option every subscription page omits is the one that wins for a surprising share of readers: hold no plan and pay per token.

The xAI API is self-serve, requires no subscription, and publishes its rates. On grok-4.6 that is $2 per million input tokens, $0.50 cached, and $6 per million output for 200,000 prompt tokens or fewer. Above 200,000 the rates double to $4 and $12, and the higher rate applies to the entire request rather than the excess, which is the single most under-published fact in this category and a real trap for anyone stuffing large contexts.

The comparison is not exact, because a subscription includes the app, the chat interface, image and video, and an allowance nobody has published. But the shape is instructive: if your usage is bursty, a subscription is a bet that you will use it, and the API charges you nothing in the weeks you do not. For anyone whose Grok usage arrives in occasional intense bursts rather than daily, that is the cheaper answer, and it is also the only one where you can see exactly what a task cost.

Students, trials, and discounts

Three routes to paying less are widely discussed and each needs a caveat.

Everything above assumes the choice is which subscription to buy. It is worth naming the assumption, because there is a third shape and we build one of them, so read this section knowing that.

The pattern is: hold whichever subscriptions you actually use, run the agents locally, and keep the metering on your side. Grok Build already supports that, since it authenticates against either a subscription or an API key. Claude Code and Codex do the same. What has been missing is somewhere to run them together, which is why every comparison article ends on "run both" and none of them explains how.
